FC Zenit (Russian: Футбольный клуб "Зенит" Санкт-Петербург) is a Russian football club, based in Saint Petersburg. The club plays in the Russian Premier League. Until recently, the team was coached by Vlastimil Petržela from the Czech Republic but he was sacked by the board of directors on May 3, 2006. Zenit has signed the experienced Dutch specialist Dick Advocaat as coach. The team's best domestic result was a championship in 1984, and its best European performance was in 2005/06 when Zenit reached the quarterfinal of the UEFA Cup.

History

The origins of Zenit Saint Petersburg date back to 1925, when a team was formed consisting of workers from a Leningrad metallurgical factory.

Originally members of the metallurgical workers' sporting society, they were called Stalinets Leningrad (translated as "Stalinist") from 1936 to 1940. This was the year when the plant became part of the military industry and its sports teams were transferred to the Zenit sports society. Stalinets were merged with a club called Zenit which played in the second division and assumed their name. The LOMO optical plant took up the ownership of the team after the war and in 1990 the independent city-owned professional club was created.

Zenit won their first honours in 1944, claiming the war-time USSR Cup after defeating CDKA in the well-attended final. The club was always adored in Leningrad but wasn't able to make much of an impact in the Soviet League. In 1967, Zenit finished last but were saved from relegation because the powers that were decided it wouldn't be prudent to relegate a Leningrad team during the 50th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, which occurred in the city.

The Eighties have finally brought some glory to the Northern Capital: the bronze medal in 1980, Soviet Cup Final 1984 and, finally, the Championship in 1984, the club's only league title to date. Next year, Zenit beat Soviet Cup holder in Soviet Super Cup (also named as Season Cup).

After being relegated in the first year of the Russian League (1992), Zenit returned to the top flight in 1996 and have been decent since. They claimed the 1999 Russian Cup, finished third in the League in 2001, made the Cup final in 2002, became the runners-up in the Premier League and won the Russian Premier League Cup in 2003.

Nicknames

Two of the widespread nicknames for Zenit are Bomzhi and Meshki. "Bomzhi" (Bums or Hobos) refers to Zenit's fans travelling long distances to away matches by local trains and sleeping in the railway stations. "Meshki" (The Sacks) dates back to 1984, when lots of plastic bags were produced with a slogan stating that "Zenit are the champions", to celebrate the title victory. The slogan is popular until now, and the bags gave rise to the nickname. Both of these nicknames, however, are somewhat sarcastic and rarely used in Saint Petersburg. Local fans prefer the nickname Sine-belo-golubye (Navy, White and Blue) derived from the club's colors.

Gazprom Control

In December 2005 Gazprom took a controlling stake in the club. The deal was announced by Valentina Matvienko, the Saint Petersburg governor. According to her, Gazprom has already arranged the construction of a new stadium and was planning to invest in the club's facilities and equipment and the development of junior football leagues.

Here we say Erik Bjurnstad Hagen or sometimes just Erik Hagen. Do you say Erik Bjurnstad Hagen in Norway?

Strange.

Most Russian people thinks his first name is Eric, but I know it is Erik.

Oh, OK.

There is some other misspellings on Russian site: Javnaker I think is Jevnaker, Stremsgodset is Stromsgodset and some mistakes with the Norwegian o (with slash in the middle) and the Norwegian a (the one with a dot).

With a bit of luck, Luch Vladivostok qualifies for Europe. A UEFA Cup game played in a city very close to Japan, how cool is that? Smile I can't imagine any longer distance is possible for the other European participants.

Of all those Moscow teams, I take CSKA, Lokomotiv and Spartak are the only ones who have a big support? Or do FC Moscow, Torpedo and FC Saturn have their loyal fanbase just as well? I know Moscow is big, but even for a city of that size, 7 clubs in the top division seems a bit much, especially when other big cities like Lvov, Novosibiirsk and Archangelsk have no teams in the top flight.

The best/correct spelling without æ, ø and å is ae, oe and aa.

Erik Bjoernstad Hagen. Stroemsgodset.

I don't think is the mest correct? I think Sprakradet have made a rule that it is not correct.

When norwegian people use their names international they should you O for Ø, E for Æ and A for Å

Yes, three Zenit fans drove all the way from west to east Russia (St. P. to Vladivostok). Very long wy!

CSKA is almost like communist club, but they have very big support. Loko and Spartak also big support. Torpedo is not very big support. So is FC Moskva and Saturn too. So XCSKA, Loko and Spartak is main teams in Moskva.

What sort of fans choose Saturn, FC Moscow or Torpedo? I mean, which area of town or which group of people get attracted to those clubs instead of the big clubs?

Imagine Vladivostok playing UEFA Cup against a team from Iceland or Portugal. That must be a trip of 10000km and the same distance back... Brilliant, it must be unique to see European football played in the far east of Asia near the Chinese and Korean border!

No, it's A for both Æ and Å, not E.

There are no rules, but you're right about one thing, AE, OE and AA is not the common practice any more (probably because of the Internet), so you can ignore my advice above.

Gerrit: Saturn is from suburb Ramenskoe, so people there choose them.

FC Moskva is new club, 1997. Most people around old Torpedo stadium support FC Moskva, sometimes also CSKA or Spartak. Old Torpedo stad. is FC Moskva stadium now.

FC Torpedo is not many fans, mainly around their stadium, Luzhniki (shared with other clubs).

I see.

I think it'd be better for the league to have teams more geographically spread. 7 teams from Moscow is a lot. Imagine you replace two or three of them by a club from Novosibiirsk, a club from Archangelsk, and a club from the more central area (maybe Alania Vladikavkaz again). You'd have the best Moscow clubs in the top division + new clubs from big cities without top football now, those new top divionists would attract a very good crowd.

May I ask (I am quite obsessed with everything arctic): what is the northernmost club in the Russian league system? Must be Murmansk I guess if you count in lower divisions?

The most north club is Belomorets in Murmansk Oblast championship (fifth level), I think. They are situated north of city of Murmansk.

Interesting, thanks for that. I'm a weird guy, I like everything arctic, so I try to find out the most northern teams of every country coming close to the arctic circle.

Is that team from Murmansk itself or are they from a town even further north?
Do they have a website?

Thanks.

I am working on a website about amateur football worldwide (including leagues in obscure locations such as Mongolia, Tuvalu, Falkland Islands, ...). Due to limited webbuilding skills it takes a while to get it finished, but be patient and it will come Smile I may dedicate an article on football in Russia's far north.

No village further north than Belomorets has a club? No teams in for example Dikson or so?
