One more question (sorry if I have many questions ): is the employment chances best in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger, Tromsø, Drammen or Kristiansand?
I'm mainly interested in Trondheim and Tromsø but if the employment chances are better elsewhere I could first spend some months in for example Oslo or Bergen, and then once I've learnt the language I could move further north.
Which city does offer the best employment chance for my profile? _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

Hi Gerrit
Seems you are fond of cold and empty places. Giving your skills and lack of norwegian I think you will need to be lucky to find a "regular" job. In that case the chances are best, I guess, in Oslo, and perhaps Stavanger. However, those places are not cold and empty.
Maybe your best shot is to visit North-Norway as a tourist (if you can afford the prices), and meet people and ask around if there's something for you. Beforehand you can try to contact students at the local universities, where you may get to meet helpful people to give advice and a helping hand. If you are interested in wildlife there are a lot of opportunities, and I see someone suggested the tourist industry. But if you have little wildlife experience you will need to learn from someone with a lot of experience.
I may as well warn you that the climate can be though, so if you plan to go you need to be prepared. I suggest you get some friends who have some experience, so you will not be alone. |

I would not mind living in Oslo or Stavanger first, learn Norwegian meanwhile and then move on to Tromsø or another Northern place. So if my chances for employment are bigger in Oslo or Stavanger or a different southern place, then I would not mind. Most important now is to get into Norway. Once I manage to do that, I will learn Norwegian rapidly enough, and within the year I can move further north. First getting into Norway is priority, regardless which Norsk city offers me employment opportunities. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

I have an interview with a Norwegian company !! And they don't require me to speak Norsk!! This is so exciting!!
I won't scream hurray though. First getting through the interview and test, and only then I will know if I can move to Norway or not. But I have hope again. I don't dare to be too optimistic just yet, but I have hope and that's a good feeling Guys, keep your fingers crossed for me, with a bit of luck I will be in Norway before Christmas... _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

Why not move to Svaldbard, not only do you not have to speak Norsk as there are many other minorities, you don't even need a visa!
The climate might be a little odd though. |

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as that to move to Svalbard. Many people want to stay there for short or long periods, because of the nature and also because of economic advantages such as low taxes and high wages. Getting a job there is not very easy, and a lot of the people who live and work up there are over-qualified for whatever they do. That being said, if you get the chance to stay there for a while, go for it.

How is this going? Do you know if you get the job yet, and can I ask what kind of a job it is and where?
Good luck anyway. _________________ Restriktive Bever |

Having left my CV and talked to several companies, waiting for the reply now... It will be hard as there's a lot of competition for those English language positions, but I keep my fingers cross. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

Can anyone tell me which newspapers (including The Local) have a room where I could post an advertisement announcing that I am looking for employment? I'm not sure which papers are often being read by recruiters, but I'd like to put a little announce in there with a link to my online CV. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

I'd like to give it a new try soon by getting to a Norwegian city and ask around for jobs. I know that a lot of hotels, bars and pubs hire extra staff for the spring/summer season. What is the best moment to go asking around, when is the moment all bars/hotels have their vacancies and look for new staff?
PS: I'm not sure yet which city... My heart says Trondheim or Tromsø, but maybe I'd have more chance in Oslo. I may travel to Norway and ask around in two or three cities, but I'd need to know the best moment to go asking around for work. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

What is the ideal moment to show up and start asking in all the pubs? Early February? Half February? Early March??
I'd like to book my travel within the week, but I'm not sure what date I should book, I'd like to be in Norway for at least 3 or 4 days and go from hotel to hotel/pub to pub to ask around for work, so need to pick the best possible moment when they're all recruiting extra staff. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

The sooner the better. A lot of youths are looking for work in the summer, so if you want the best (paid) jobs I would recommend early february. _________________ Mot dumhet kjemper selv gudene forgjeves. |

Did a very quick search on FINN.no, and found one bartender-job in Oslo.
This is a full-time job at the Scandic Hotel. Qualifications: Preferably educated or well experienced.

(in norwegian)
EDIT: hmm, seems like the link didn't work. Anyhow, you can go to finn.no, then click "Jobb" and put in "bartender" in the search field.. |

By when are all vacancies in the pubs (vacancies for extra staff for spring/summer season) usually filled? Just to make sure that I book a date BEFORE they've all completed their recruitment.
I should add I have 4 weeks notice period at my current job in Ireland, so I should go to Norway to apply for work, with the plan to start the job 4 weeks later. I just need to know at what time it's best to ask around, to have a good chance of finding a lot of pubs recruiting staff. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

I spent a little more time learning Nyorsk today, i'm beginning to get a feel for the language. It's not too difficult to learn the standard words/phrases. However i am concerened about local or informal speak, are there many words that are used in every day life that might not be in my dictionary? |

For your q; I dont know. But why are you learning Nynorsk - just out of curiosity? Most Norwegian people dont even bother to learn it. |

Hehe, I am curious yes, but to cut a long story short i was stopped in Aberdeen City Centre and asked a question by a Norwegian man about the location of the nearest bank. His english was excellent obviously and i thought why not try and learn to speak his language.
This combined with my interest in your country and employment ambitions offcourse. (I was in Oslo last summer, you all speak excellent English by the way.) I went to Fotball Shop in Oslo City which was interesting, bought some RBK stuff that i can't get here.
Back to the language, I can write most common phrases and speak a little, not sure if i'd be able to understand Norsk in full flow though. |
