Hello, I have few questions about the royal league
1. It is a scandinavian league, then why Iceland and Finland aren't accepted in it?
2. What goes for the winner?
3. Do the teams take the games seriously? _________________ ~GA

1. Iceland and Finland are not part of Scandinavia. It is called "Royal", because the three countries are monarchies, while Finland and Iceland are republics.
2. A fair amount of cash.
3. No, except for FCK. _________________ 4-4-3 |

I would say Rosenborg took the league fairly serious when we competed in 04/05, as the coaches wanted match training between the Champions League matches.

Scandinavia is just Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
Finland are not a part of Scandinavia. |

That's a lie.

For us (FCK)supporters, it's no more than training matches on a bit higher level. |

To elaborate:
The "Scandinavian countries" are Norway, Denmark and Sweden.
The "Nordic countries" are Scandinavia plus Finland and Iceland.
But, as Wiki says, "The usage and meaning of the term outside Scandinavia is somewhat ambiguous." |

I think Finnish champion and runners-up will be in Royal League next years.
Do you think that it will be possible?

There's some decent football being played (at times) in both Iceland and the faeroes, and the finnish league is probably on par with the current three (at least the top two teams would not make fools of themselves in that company). Maybe the best team from iceland and fareoes could join, expanding the roster from 12 today, to 16 (two from finland, one each from iceland, faeroes?)
It would make the competition broader in appeal. I think UEFA has already ruled out giving the winner (or 5th runner up orwhatever...) a spot in the UEFA cup. And it would fit, culturally. _________________ Svein Sjovold |

No Royal League for 07/08 due to financial reasons. Guess that won't really affect RBK.
I find it strange that Denmark keep dominating this competition despite being in mid-season. |

I had noticed that Wikipedia had mentioned of there being consideration to add the winners of the Finnish and Icelandic premier leagues to the Royal League (uncited, of course.) However I did find mention of it in a 2006 FIFA.com article about the Royal League in 2006.
Quote: | The name Royal League reflects the fact that all the participating nations are kingdoms, but also symbolises a measure of distance from Finland, whose clubs were not incorporated at the start as officials questioned their sporting credentials and spectator appeal. The competition is mainly financed by local sponsorship and the sale of TV rights. Three different television stations signed five-year deals right at the start. In the mid-term, teams from Finland and Iceland may be considered for admission. |
So I guess having Iceland and Finland in the tournament is possible. I haven't seen any more recent news though, perhaps some more will be said nearer the 2008-2009 competition?
I understand the grammatical problem of having them in a Scandinavian tournament and comprised of monarchies, but I agree with ssjovold that it would broaden the appeal. Then again, I am watching from the outside, as it were. |

The clubs and comitée think there are too many matches in the tournament, and think of reducing them to 27 in a probable 2009 edition.
In other words: In the moment there is no interest in inviting more countries. |

Ah, good to know, I'm happy to have some more recent news. Thanks!
Is the possible reduction in match numbers due to spectator interest, money or something else? |

Mainly lack of time. The clubs want vacation when the league is finished in early November, and the pre-season starts in January. The 2009 Royal League will therefore just be played in February and March. |

That makes a lot of sense, thank you for the info. It's a long time wait, but I'm really looking forward to the next Royal League nonetheless. |

too bad, I think it would be interesting to see teams like HJK Helsinki and IA Akranes in the Royal League. I don't think they would be minnows, they won't win the tournament of course but I also don't think they would embarrass themselves. Of course Faroe Islands is different but a trip to Torshavn would add an exotic element to the tournament which can be just as charming as another potential winner.
And probably this will never happen, but if we make it a Nordic League we could include the Greenlandic champions. Yes, there is football in Greenland, and it is even quite popular. Even Qanaaq in the far north of Greenland has a club (must be the northernmost club in the world playing competitive football...)
But definitely Iceland and Finland should have a slot in the Royal League. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

As said, Royal League next time (if there ever will be a next time) will take place in 7-8 weeks in February and March. It is simple not possible to invite more clubs.
And I have to say that the Finnish and Icelandic clubs are at a level below the Scandinavian. |
