|
|
As I posted in a different thread, Norway is the country I hope to move to, mainly the cities of Trondheim and Tromsø and the islands Svalbard interest me to move to. Moving as far north as possible is a lifelong dream of mine, as the arctic has been an obsession since I first watched the globe at age 5.
As my work in Northern Ireland is done just past the summer and as I'd like to move further north afterwards, I am starting to explore the possibilities. However, it seems it's hard to get information, as the only websites I found are big companies such as monster.no and manpower.no that are quite hard to reach.
Then there's the big frustration: AETAT. Very frustrating organisation to deal with... I sent them different emails (both the national branch and the regional offices in Kirkenes, Tromsø, Trondheim and Hammerfest) but never got any reply.
Any hints for foreigners hoping to find a job in Norway? What's the best place to start looking (recruitment organisation or so)? _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

Yeah, Aetat is very frustrating indeed, not just for foreigners. What line of business are you looking for work in? I would recommend taking directly contact with potential employers. Also, I wouldn't recommend moving to Svalbard, unless you have a job there first. |

Yep, I don't think you even are allowed to move to Svalbard without having a job or study there. |

What's so unappealing about Svalbard then? It seems the most fascinating place imaginable to this arctic obsessive
As for what industries... I mainly did callcenter work and office (administration) work, so that would be a logical choice. I am also prepared to give hotel work a go though, as long as they give me a job that doesn't require to really socialise with customers (as long as they just let me routine work like check-in/check-out it's fine). I have Asperger Syndrome so very social jobs are difficult for me, whereas in an office or when only speaking over the phone I feel more comfortable.
Where could I find an overview of companies that I could try sending my CV to? _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

Norway has had a ban on immigration since -75. Only people seeking asylum or people with certain professions that provide labour we need are allowed to move here. Sweden is an EU member and you could move there easily. Would be your best bet.
I don't mean to come off as an asshole, but it is the sad truth. |

All people from EU can get a job in Norway due to the EØS (don't remember the english name)-treaty.. That's why so many from Poland is coming here now. |

Foreign companies operating here have workers living here. They do not get permanent residence. |

Foreigners can also come to work for norwegian companies. And as long as they have a job you can of course stay. Norwegians can find jobs in all EU countries as well. In football that is why there is no longer any limits on the number of EU/EØS players. |

It is complicated. Your best bet is to come here on a vacation and marry an ugly. |

If you begin learning Norwegian don't be afraid of asking us for help.
And what was that about placement? Where do you want to go? |

Well, next year if everything goes well i'm hoping to work in Norway in a placement as part of my course at Aberdeen Business School.
From what i've read, the best place for me to in my particular area, finance, would be Stavanger or Bergen where the oil related companies are based. Trondheim from what i gather has more technology work with NTNU in the city and other marine technology related industry.
Are there any large energy companies based in Trondheim? I know Shell, Statoil are headquartered in Stavanger which is very much like Aberdeen which is why i kind of don't really want to work there. Plus, i don't support Viking. [/url] |

You should try it, if you like Shakespearean tragedies. Or Ken Loach. The supporting that is, Stavanger is a beautiful city, and imho not that much like Aberdeen. It is also, larger than Trondheim (metropolitan area).
About energy companies in Trondheim I've heard about Enita and the EC Group. Stavanger has Lyse. _________________ 4-4-3 |

I wouldn't speak of "metropolitan" areas in Norway. So his point is moot. Trondheim is Norways third biggest "city", make no mistake |

This is war!
(Hopefully, this gives you an idea of the closest we get to regional patriotism before our matches. "My area is a metropolitan area!" "No it's not!") _________________ 4-4-3 |

I mean that both are Oil cities and are roughly the same size, Aberdeen is pretty grim, not pretty like Edinburgh or my hometown Inverness.
Stavanger has very good air links with Aberdeen though which would tempt me more than Trondheim, for Trondheim i would have to fly from London or Amsterdam, which means going a few hours south when all i want to do is fly a couple of hours north.
Pity the Scottish and Norweigian air links are so weak outwith Aberdeen and Stavanger. |

Yeah, Stavanger is quite pretty. Beautiful nature-surroundings, fresh air, and loads of activites you can do in the nearby-area. Not so far away from "Prekestolen" either:
But then again, every city in Norway (except Drammen) are beautiful. _________________ 4-4-3 |

Could someone tell me where I can find a list of companies, hotels and enterprises in the areas of Tromsø, Hammerfest and Longyearbyen? Then I'll start sending my CV around. Hoping they won't find it 'pushing' and are flattered instead to see foreign attention for their area _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

OK, thought I'd give an update on this: I still have no reply from AETAT and also the University of Tromsø was not very responsive... However, someone in Svalbard did reply to my (non-asked for) application and says that given my language skills (I speak 4 languages) I could probably find work in Svalbard's tourism industry. Not sure if my chances are really there, but it may be worth a shot!
But does anyone know where I can find lists of companies and tourism-based organisations in Finnmark, Troms, or Svalbard ; I would then just send my CV around so that they know I'm out there and interested to come up. Even Trondheim would be okay, but not further south. _________________ Rosenborg, forever pride of the North!

For the love of god, don't consider going to Hammerfest. It's an awful little town, and the most violent place in Norway.
A list of companies in Longyearbyen can be found here (in norwegian, but with links to those who have websites). As for Tromsø, this is probably a good place to start (the online phonebooks lists of companies in Tromsø). _________________ Restriktive Bever |

Yep, if you want to move to Finnmark, maybe Alta will be a better choice. |
