Don't listen too much to the nynorsk-haters, which you find many of among the young and ignorant. Nynorsk is a minority when considering the amount of people - but geographically it covers a considerable part of Norway. Much of the most brilliant prose and poetry is written in nynorsk too.

Just got in touch with a company near the Nordkapp... Although it's just a first chat and maybe they just asked to ring out of politeness instead of concrete interest, I can't help dreaming away when hearing that name alone... I always dreamt of North Norway since I was a young kid, and apart from Svalbard one cannot get much further north Smile But maybe they just asked to ring out of politeness or so, we'll see.

Also, someone told me that Trondheim has a sort of complex where concerts, events and bars are located, and that they hire extra staff for the summer and spring. Does anyone know this bar, and would they be accepting multilingual staff?

Well, summer approaching and as I was told last year, this would be the best time of the year to ask around for bar and/or hotel jobs as all are recruiting extra staff for the busy summer season.

Now I'd be keen on giving it another try, but my finances worry me a bit. I have some reserves but if I blow them on hotel bills, there would be not enough left to actually move if the jobhunt would be succesful.

Does anyone know if there is a sort of advertisement space existing where people who have a spare bed/room for a week or two advertise? Of course I'd pay a contribution for it, as long as it's an alternative to the (expensive) B&B or hotels...

Dropped the plans of moving? Or did you get a job?

Would still love to move, but the applying from a distance isn't the easiest way as many employers prefer to talk only with those already in the area (especially in the hotel/tourism industry where vacancies sometimes are just advertised with a hangout on the door rather than online or at agencies -- unfortunately that happens to be the best industry for immigrants wanting a first job in Scandinavia, so it's quite hard to have access to those vacancies while I'm in Ireland...)

I still would love to move. What I do consider is maybe going to another country for one year or so, saving some money while meanwhile getting another experience (I am a bit fed up of ireland after 3 years, but also still have the fire for travelling so i want to stay abroad) and then once I have saved some more money making a new attempt in Norway and maybe moving without first searching a job. As I said this is a vague idea I consider. I'd still love to come to Norway, but while waiting for the opportunity I may do a short while in a different country as i'd rather to a new country to discover than waiting another year in Ireland where I've more or less seen everything. I always found the Middle East culturally very interesting so maybe I'd go there for a year, or to southern Europe or maybe Eastern Europe or so. Just a new discovery (rather than a 4th year in Ireland) while saving some money to go to Norway afterwards.

These are just ideas I am considering of course. If I'd manage to find something in Norway, I would of course take it without a single doubt. But if I need to wait until I have a large financial reserve (then to move prior to looking for employment) then I'd rather wait while discovering yet another country ... so hence why I'd consider a year elsewhere while waiting for the right offer from Norway.

We'll see what happens anyway. Norway is and remains the big dream.

Thanks! Smile If a next Norwegian jobhunt is arising (in the near of more distant future, depending on my financial status) I will definitely remind you of that Cool

It is that time of the year again... Pubs and hotels are all recruiting. If anyone wants to do a good word for me in a local pub or hotel... Wink Not that Istanbul doesn't please me but Norway is and remains my big dream...

Is there still a lot of vacancies in hotels and pubs around Norway?

I saved some money to travel to Norway to make applications again. I am just not sure if this is the right moment. Most hotels and bars may have recruited their staff for the winter season already? Is it still easy to get a job now, or would I be better to travel in February or March when the hotels and bars all recruit new staff for spring and summer?

I have made a nice website finally and it includes my CV. Now I would like to put a "job wanted" advertisement in several Norwegian papers.

Could anyone please translate this for me?

"Dear Editor,

Is it possible to please publish following annons in your paper? Thank you in advance.

Annons:
Multilingual Belgian searching job in Norway. Speaks English, Dutch, French, German. Looking for full-time job in company, hotel or bar. See my CV on www.gerritsite.com"

I don't see any point in publishing an such ad. There are almost no firms that will read a such ad. If you want a job in Norway you gotta contact the firm directly.

Well, I may have some progress here. A company in Oslo got in touch with me and they sound really enthousiast. They invited me for an interview in Oslo on Friday Cool and they even pay my flights to Oslo and back! I just need to sort out hotel accomodation myself. If I get the job I could start there by the end of the next month.

Just a question: does anyone know Oslo well enough to point me at a cheap hostel (just a single room but it doesn't have to be anything luxurious, a bed and a shower is all I need) or even better, does anyone know someone in the city that may have a couch or sleeping bag that I could use without needing to make costs?

Thanks Tommel'n opp! Salary would be 14000 NOK per month netto, that isn't bad isn't it? I remember the bartending jobs I unsuccesfully applied for in the past only paid 9000 or 10000 NOK per month ...

14000 NOK a month netto is good. I survive on 6000 a month as student. With 14000 I would be rich. Razz However, you may expect using 5000 on apartment rents.

5000 NOK would be OK Smile That still leaves 9000 NOK for decent living and a bit of trips. Let's say I won't come to Norway to stay in the home city the whole time, I want to really discover the country including the further outskirts. So it'd be cool to spare a bit of money every month for trips to throughout the country (and for more regular visits to Lerkendal Cool )

If anyone'd know somebody in Oslo who could let me use his couch then I would make it a weekend trip. Otherwise I'll make it two days (I need to save money to pay relocation in case I'd be hired).

OK, flying to Oslo on Thursday. Hopefully more luck than the previous attempt.

The flight costs me over 4000 NOK Neutral Hopefully the company keeps their promise of refunding the flight tickets regardless of the outcome of the interview.

IT company. They do a lot of different software types and operate under several names (like semi-independent companies who together form one big enterprise). It is not sure which of the companies they run I will be working for, tomorrow I will be interviewed. Hopefully it will turn out allright.

PS: are you sure 5000 or 6000 kroner would pay the apartment? I arrived in Oslo about 5 hours ago and found the time to look through the estate section of Morgenbladet. I saw prices up to 12000 NOK per month Surprised Confused Guess those must be really big apartments in the full center or so, while the ones just out of the center are a lot cheaper? i only need a 1-person apartment though, so it doesn't have to be big.
