Rosenborg have the modest ambition of avoiding relegation after a wretched run this year rooted in years of poor coaching, a leaky defence and an ageing squad.

The aim this autumn is to grap nine points, which likely is enough for play in the Tippeliga next season.
"Our objective target is very realistic. We have seven matches still to play, and if our performances from the Lyn match continue, I am certain we will get enough points," Høgmo says.

There is of course no easy answer to this. First I have to say that Rosenborg have been worsened every year since our great 1999 season. This have not changed over the night (as a Norwegian saying says).
I think the players' mentality is the biggest problem. They don't agree on this themselves, but it is easy to see that some/many (vary a bit) of them in some games are not willing to give everything. It seems like many of them is well satisfied by being signed by Rosenborg and given good wages (after Norwegian standard). They have in some way achieved what they wanted in their career. For a true supporter it is really depressing to see well-paid players don't give 100%.
At the same time the board, president (Snuruås), CEO (Skutle) and sports director (Bratseth) have been acting arrogantly. They wanted Sollied to replace Eggen already in 2003, but Aage Hareide proved to be a good hiring. When he left for the national team, the trouble began.
The bosses once more said Sollied was their first choice, but since he was not interested moving home, assistant coach Ola By Rise was hired in front of the 2004 season. He did a good season, securing the league title and qualifying to the Champions League, but the bosses never gave him full confidence. This affected the players, and in the end By Rise was sacked.
Then it was a reprise: Again Sollied was asked, and there were negotiations in Belgium in October/November last year. But again Sollied turned the offer down, and By Rise's assitant Per Joar Hansen was hired. He is/was a pretty good coach, but not as good as his predecessors. He did some tactically wrong decisions during games which we loss, and soon the board was not able to hide their mistrust and openly began the search for a new coach.
On Friday 5 August Per-Mathias Hoegmo secretly signed a contract starting 1 January. I think Hansen knew this, and after the 1-2 loss for Lillestroem, he withdrew for his position, giving Hoegmo his job.
Hoegmo seems like a much better coach than Hansen, and hopefully he will make some necessary changes. What I like the best, is that he is saying that he wants to take a closer look on Skutle and Bratseth's roles in the club. This leader duo has not done their job good enough in my eyes, but Hoegmo is the first having enough guts to tell them. |

hoegmos previous accomplishments include coaching the team tromsø to a fourth place in the norwegian league. the year before he came they were sucktacularly bad. but after getting him they almost won the tippeliga. but after they sold their star player pedersen to blackburn they lost too many points. and after hoegmo left they are now fighting against relegation with the excact same players that he had.
he is a perfectionist, tactical genius, a great psychologist, player developer and someone who knows how to build a team from the ground up. i think that he is (together with starts corpulent and humorous tom nordlie) the greatest coaching talent in norway since nils arne eggen. i think rosenborg made the right choice.
he has publicly said that he wanted to take rbk to the quarter finals in the ucl. thats the kind of attitude ive been missing in rosenborg. |

i think getting the team to the ucl wasnt just talking - it was doing! but i can totally see that he has made some great mistakes, eg not selling johnsen and letting johnsen play. hopefully thatll change soon. |

"This is typical for Rosenborg this year," Thorstein Helstad concluded after the match.

Aalesund's 4-1 win away at Fredrikstad was almost as important as our own win. Now we're suddenly on 9th place on the table, with one match more played than Molde. |

"If Rosenborg are relegated this year, it will be the biggest sensation in Norwegian footballing history. Remember, this is not a freak result from a cup game, this is being relegated after 26 league games," former Norway coach Nils Johan Semb says.
(...)
Rosenborg director of football Rune Bratseth stated at the start of the year that this was the club's best squad ever. The reality has shown Bratseth to be wrong. Some players seem past their peak, and the trademark slick moves at high tempo have gone almost completely missing.

"I can't really explain what is happening to us in the league," sighed Høgmo. "It is almost like the X-Files. You have to see it to believe it."

The Times reports today:
(...) the kings of Norway have not only been dethroned but threatened with removal from their domain: hopes of a fourteenth successive championship for Rosenborg are long gone and with three games of this season remaining, they are in danger of relegation.
(...)
Nils Skutle, the Rosenborg managing director, admits that his club have been too insular, wrongly assuming that continuing with Eggen’s attacking 4-3-3 formation would guarantee further domination. "When you take coaches from inside the club, it’s not so easy to get a new way of thinking," Skutle said.
